MANGROVES



Mangrove forests constitute an important component of coastal eco- systems. They thrive in tidle estuaries , salt marshes, muddy coast lines. Conservation of mangrove to shrimp farms significantly reduces the natural production of wild capture shrimp as well as other fisheries. More over , their production role for low-lying coastal regions in rapidly diminishing by their replacement by shrimp ponds. The Sundar Bans, which constitute one of the biggest mangrove areas in the world , covered in the early 1990′ s about 12000 sq kms. in India and Bangladesh. In West Bengal part of Sundar Bans large mangrove areas have been replaced by the shrimp ponds. [ S.Jagannath vs Union of India AIR 1997 SC 811.]
